Why the Moth-in-Lightbulb? The Story Behind Our Logo

Logos are funny things. From a simple swoosh-and-tagline to a fruit with a bite out of it, most go for as much meaning in as little space as possible. Something about those big companies feels a bit safe and vague. But at Curioaks, we've never been good at playing it safe, and we're only vague when the suspense is interesting.

A logo is supposed to mean something. It's supposed to be something you look at twice and can still feel it tugging at your imagination. Our little illuminated oddity is just that something. We created the moth inside of the lightbulb to instantly reframe how you saw the word curiosity. We wanted you to feel like there was something more for you to discover..

.

The Pull of the Moth

Everyone knows the old saying, like a moth to a flame. The moth, doomed by its own fascination, spirals into the fire. It's a phrase people use to describe being utterly, hopelessly, and foolishly drawn to something. Dangerous, irrational, and romantic (in a tragic sort of way). Its a fatal fling, this dance with the flame.

Fire ends things. Lightbulbs start them.

So we swapped the flame for a bulb. They stand for ideas, eureka moments, knowledge. We wanted to reframe how curiosity was portrayed. It didn't kill the cat, it isn't a kamikaze moth. It is the thing that tugs us towards wonder, enchantment, and yes, illumination...the kind that sparks ideas and lights up possibility. Its a graphic shorthand for invention, discovery, and a flash of brilliance.

Our moth doesn't merely circle the light. It becomes the glow, the filament taking the shape of two wings as light radiates from it. The moth isn't destroyed, it is illuminated.

From Flame to Bulb to Logo

We live in a world that is increasingly sure of itself. Answers are instant, algorithms predict our every want, and hot takes fill the air faster than questions can even form. Certainty has become the default way of life.

Therein lies the heart of it. We believe that certainty is overrated. What the human spirit craves is the unknown, the late-night spiraling, the odd detours that lead us somewhere new. We like the feeling that the world isn't finished revealing itself. In a time when everything is a foregone conclusion, curiosity feels rebellious. It's a reminder that the unknown is worth chasing.

The moth-in-lightbulb logo is our way of saying what matters to us. It's our manifesto in miniature form: Stay Curious. Seek illumination. Circle the strange and unusual.

The hidden wonders that we discover along the way that we bring to you in the guise of pop-up tents of peculiar treasures, or in an ill-lit corner of the internet, those are the sparks that make life bright.

A Nod to the Humble Moth

ree

A word of appreciation for all 160,000 species of moth fluttering about the planet: Moths are extraordinary! They range in size from a tiny freckle to wingspans as large as a dinnerplate (look up the Atlas Moth, and thank us later). Some look like they're wearing tiny fur coats, while some mimic owls or snakes to ward of predators. They pollinate night-blooming flowers, feed ecosystems, and yes, sometimes they nibble your sweaters. They're undeniably cool and so underrated.

New research has even solved an age-old mystery! Moths aren't simply drawn to the light at night. They use a navigation system that orients them by the stable lights of the moon and stars. When we humans dangle an alternate light source via porch light or streetlamp, we are instead confusing their little GPS system, causing them to short-circuit and spiral endlessly into the artificial glow. We think they deserve a little recognition for their sacrifice!

We're proud to have them as the beating heart behind our curiosity logo. And like the humble moth, we'll keep circling the glow, until curiosity becomes illumination. It's all about keeping the mysteries alive.

We'd love for you to circle with us.
